Privacy Policy
Last updated 17 September 2026 · Applies to Levain for iPhone
The short version. Levain has no account, no server and no analytics. Your recipes, bake sessions, notes and loaf photos are stored on your iPhone and are never sent anywhere. Nothing about you is collected, and nothing is shared or sold.
1. Who this is from
Levain ("the app") is an iPhone app made by an independent developer. Questions about this policy go to liuys614@gmail.com.
2. Information we collect
None. There is no sign-up, no login and no user profile. The app sends no usage data, no device identifiers, no crash reports and no advertising identifiers to the developer or to anyone else. Levain contains no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK and no third-party tracking library of any kind.
3. What is stored on your device
Everything the app remembers stays in the app's own storage on your iPhone:
- Recipes and stages — the breads you build, their timings, ingredients and temperature or humidity targets.
- Bake sessions — the running timer's state, so a bake survives a restart.
- Your bake journal — the photos you take of your loaves, plus notes, dates and the ingredient snapshot for each logged bake.
- Settings — units, defaults and your alarm preferences.
This data is not backed up to any server we control. If you have iCloud Backup switched on in iOS, your iPhone's own backup may include it, in the same way it includes other app data. That backup is between you and Apple, and is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
4. Camera and photos
Levain asks for camera access so you can photograph a finished loaf and make it the icon for that bread or that logged bake. Photos are saved in the app's own storage on your device. To render a loaf as a cut-out sticker on the calendar, the app separates the bread from its background using Apple's Vision framework, which runs entirely on your iPhone. Your photos are never uploaded, never transmitted and never seen by the developer.
5. Alarms and notifications
Stage alerts are scheduled locally on your device through Apple's AlarmKit and notification APIs so they can ring through silent mode and Focus. There is no push notification server, which means nothing about your bake schedule leaves your phone in order to alert you.
6. The one network request Levain makes
We would rather say this plainly than claim the app never touches the internet. On first
launch, Levain downloads a handful of sample loaf photographs for its two starter
recipes from Wikimedia Commons (upload.wikimedia.org), so the app does not
ship tens of megabytes of stock imagery.
That request is an ordinary image download. No identifier, no account and no information about you is attached to it. As with any web request, the server on the other end can see the IP address it came from — Wikimedia's handling of that is covered by the Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy. If the download fails or you are offline, the app works normally and simply shows the recipes without those photos.
The app makes no other network requests.
7. Purchases
Levain Pro is sold through Apple's In-App Purchase system. Apple handles the entire transaction: we never see and never receive your name, your payment card, your billing address or your Apple Account details. The app only asks Apple whether a valid purchase exists on the device, and unlocks accordingly. Apple's handling of that transaction is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
Apple provides the developer with aggregate, anonymised sales and download reports in App Store Connect. These cannot identify an individual customer.
8. Sharing and selling
There is no data to share and none to sell. We do not sell or share personal information with third parties, for advertising or for anything else, because we do not hold any.
9. Children
Levain is a baking tool for a general audience. It is not directed at children under 13, and because it collects no information at all, it collects none from children.
10. Your rights
Privacy laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA give you rights to access, correct, export or delete the personal data a company holds about you. We hold none, so there is nothing for us to retrieve or erase on your behalf.
You are fully in control of the data on your own device: deleting a recipe or a logged bake removes it from the app, and deleting the app removes everything it stored, permanently. You are welcome to write to us with a question either way.
11. Changes to this policy
If the app ever starts doing something this page does not describe, this page changes first. The date at the top always reflects the current version, and a material change will also be noted in the app's release notes on the App Store.
