Terms of Use
Last updated 17 September 2026 · End User License Agreement for Levain
The short version. Levain is licensed to you, not sold. The monthly and yearly Pro plans renew automatically until you cancel, which you do in your iPhone's Settings. Refunds are handled by Apple. Bake times in the app are guidance — you are the one in the kitchen, and food and oven safety are yours.
1. Agreement
These Terms of Use (the "Agreement") are a legal agreement between you and the independent developer of Levain ("we", "us") covering your use of the Levain iPhone app and this website (together, "the app"). By downloading or using the app you agree to this Agreement. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
This Agreement is between you and us only, not with Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the app and its content.
2. Licence
We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use the app on any Apple-branded device that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the App Store Terms of Service. The app is licensed, not sold. You may not rent, lease, lend, sell, redistribute or sublicense it, and you may not reverse engineer, decompile or attempt to derive its source code except to the extent that restriction is prohibited by law.
3. Free version
Levain can be used without paying. The free version includes the full multi-stage timer, loud alarms and the Live Activity, and is limited to 3 recipes. The photo bake journal and calendar logging require Levain Pro. We may change what the free version includes in a future release; we will not retroactively remove content you have already created.
4. Levain Pro and auto-renewing subscriptions
Levain Pro removes the recipe and journal limits. It is offered as:
- Monthly — US$3.99 per month, an auto-renewing subscription.
- Yearly — US$15.99 per year, an auto-renewing subscription, starting with a 7-day free trial.
- Lifetime — US$29.99, a one-time purchase that does not renew.
Prices are shown in US dollars and vary by country or region; the price you pay is the one shown in the app at the moment of purchase, in your local currency.
For the auto-renewing plans:
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase.
- The subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Your Apple Account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period, at the rate then in effect.
- You can manage and cancel your subscription at any time in Settings › your name › Subscriptions on your iPhone. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not end the period you have already paid for, and Pro stays unlocked until that period runs out.
About the free trial: the 7-day trial is offered on the yearly plan to customers who have not used it before. If you do not cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, it converts to a paid yearly subscription and your Apple Account is charged. If you buy a subscription while a free trial is running, the unused portion of that trial is forfeited.
5. Refunds
All purchases are processed by Apple, so all refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store Terms of Service. We cannot issue a refund ourselves. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something is wrong with the app, please write to us anyway — we would rather fix it.
6. Baking, food safety and your own judgement
This matters more in a baking app than the usual boilerplate, so it is stated plainly.
Levain is a timer and a record-keeping tool. The durations, temperatures, hydration figures and baker's percentages it shows are guidance based on what you enter, not instructions from a food safety authority. Fermentation is affected by your flour, your starter, your room and your oven, none of which the app can measure.
You are responsible for the safety of what you bake and for the safe use of your oven and kitchen. Use your own judgement about dough that has over-proofed, been left out too long, or looks or smells wrong, and follow the food safety guidance that applies where you live. Never leave a heat source unattended because an app said a timer had not finished. If you have a food allergy or a medical condition, do not rely on the app's ingredient or percentage calculations in place of professional advice.
Alarms depend on iOS, on the permissions you grant and on your device being switched on and charged. They are reliable, but they are not a safety device — do not rely on Levain alone for anything where a missed alert would be dangerous.
7. Your content
The recipes, notes and photos you create in Levain are yours. They stay on your device, we never receive them, and we claim no rights over them. Keeping them safe is up to you and your device backups — see the Privacy Policy.
8. Acceptable use
Do not use the app unlawfully, do not attempt to circumvent its purchase checks, and do not interfere with its operation or with other users' devices.
9. Disclaimer of warranty
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that alarms will fire under every condition your device can be in.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so some of the above may not apply to you. Nothing in this Agreement limits any statutory consumer right you have that cannot be waived.
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, ruined bakes, lost ingredients or lost profits, arising out of your use of or inability to use the app. Our total liability to you for any claim relating to the app is limited to the amount you actually paid for it in the twelve months before the claim arose.
11. Changes and termination
We may update the app and this Agreement. When we change this page materially we will update the date at the top and note it in the App Store release notes; continuing to use the app after that means you accept the change. This licence ends automatically if you breach it, and you may end it at any time by deleting the app.
12. Governing law
This Agreement is governed by the laws of Taiwan, without regard to its conflict of law rules, except where the mandatory consumer protection law of your country of residence gives you rights that cannot be overridden by agreement — those continue to apply.
13. Terms required by Apple
Because Levain is distributed through the App Store, Apple requires the following terms to form part of this Agreement. In the event of a conflict, these prevail.
- Acknowledgement. This Agreement is between you and us only, not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content.
- Scope of licence. The licence granted in section 2 is limited to a non-transferable licence to use the app on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Usage Rules.
- Maintenance and support. We are solely responsible for providing maintenance and support for the app. Apple has no obligation to furnish any maintenance or support services.
- Warranty. We are solely responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent not effectively disclaimed. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app to you. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to the app.
- Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims relating to the app or your use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection, privacy or similar legislation.
- Intellectual property rights. In the event of a third-party claim that the app or your use of it infringes that third party's intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement and discharge of that claim.
- Legal compliance. You represent and warrant that you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not listed on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Developer name and address. Questions, complaints and claims about the app should be directed to liuys614@gmail.com.
- Third-party terms. You must comply with any applicable third-party terms of agreement when using the app.
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this Agreement and, upon your acceptance of it, will have the right to enforce it against you as a third-party beneficiary.
